Cherry TV Lift cabinet

Project by RBWoodworker posted 133 days ago 862 views 3 times favorited 27 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Finally delivered the tv lift cabinet to very happy clients.. I really worked hard on this to make it as nice as I could and it was my first veneer job as well as my first tv lift / radius cabinet job.. I learned a whole lot on this and really want to make many more..

The cabinet is quarter sawn cherry, figured cherry, and walnut.. the stain was so dark that it made the walnut blend with the cherry where you cannot tell it’s walnut, but that’s ok..it really turned out nice..as the pictures shows, the tv screen is towards the bed, but the way I designed this..the tv lift can be turned around if they ever want to use the cabinet against the wall.. also..the satelite receiver box is hidden in the base with the baseboard covering the opening and works via infrared eye..I bought the lift from vector motion (www.tvliftkits.com) and while it’s one of the cheaper lifts on the market..it really works well..I had to modify the top of the lift to allow the top to float back into the sloted opening in the top so no hinges are used and the top looks clean

This is very creative! It look almost like a blanket chest at first glance. Tell me more about the cherry walnut stain situation. Did you stain the walnut as well?

This is amazing, I have never seen this. From your picture you can not even see the seem in the top. Wow, how about a picture of the inside workings. Great job.

Fantastic job. Really came out nice. How did you end up doing the moldings?

Very nice! I always want to make some furniture with curvature. How hard is it to make? How many hours did you put into this project.

Thanks all..
Christopher..the stain was custom made to give me that deep darkish reddish tone that is seen on so many cherry pieces..I actually took a leaf out of the clients table and had the stain match..

Hi..Porosky..I will try and take a few of the inside of the cabinet..it really is basically an opening big enough to allow for the lift and tv..I drilled grommet holes to allow the cords and cables to pass through and everything is concealed

Hi Jerry..thanks.. I ended up making a template of the radius..used a compass to trace the curves radius onto a scrap board..then extended the compass to the thickness of the molding and traced the outter radius..cut out the pattern and used a pattern cutting bit in the routertable to mill my radius clean and accurate.. Changed the bits to my profile..sprayed minueral spirits on the cherry lumber to basically lubricate it when it passes through the cutters (works like a charm..) Then scribed the back of the molding and bandsawed the molding off the board and sanded it to a perfect fit.. It was a learning experience but worked great!

Hi simon.. Making a curved cabinet is really a lot of fun but takes careful planning and double checking everything u do..the key is to make both radiuses identicle and perfectly smooth so when you lay the veneer..its not bumpy or wavy.. I will have to post how I made this cabinet as soon as I can..

Great project! It appears you did a superb job.
My wife mentioned just yesterday that she wanted me
to build a TV lift cabinet. I told her that I did not know
where to get the mechanics.
Thanks for posting your project.
I`ll go to TVLIFTKITS and get one of theirs.

Hi cobbler..thank you.. Yes..the tv lift website was given to me by Lee Jesberger who also gave me tons of advise on veneering..his website prowoodworkingtips.com is fantastic and I highly recommend it for advise and materials as well as tons of cool reading.. I habe not been able to compare this lift to other lifts..but I really liked this lift and it works smoothly and is quite strong..I feel its a good design and their price of 680 including shipping is the cheapest I found but worth every penny..it has rollers on the top of the lift to allow your top to open without rubbing..but u have to use a piano hinge on the top which I didn’t want to do..but the roller brackets unscrew and I made a support to alllow my top to rise and lower with the tv..

Bill..thank you for your compliments

Jockmike..thanks also..

And my buddy Lee.. Your an inspiration to us all..like I said..I never would have attempted this without your prodding for me to try it.. Many thanks to you and your website that’s full of awesome things

Randall you did a great job of making that molding. Sounds like you did it the right way too. Really looks good. Did you use the flexcore for the curved ends?

Hi Jerry

No.. Didn’t use the flexcore on this one.. I traced my radius off my cabinet onto cherry lumber and bandsawed it out and used a pattern cutting bit in my router to mill my profile.. Having made a template to exact curve of the radius..I was able to get a perfect fit..

Super nice work! The radius corners are never easy but they are absolutely beautiful and add a tremendous amount of eye value. Great color match to the bed as well. Well done.

Thank you Kabashu!.. I really had a great time building this cabinet and although it took me about 3 weeks+ to make from start to finish, I learned a tremendous amount.. I was fortunate to picture almost all the steps I took to do this and as soon as my internet is up and running which should be within a week.. I will start a blog on how I did this from start to finish..glad you liked it..the clients were besides themselves..
