Project Information

Hello folks!
This will be my first post in the site, I hope you'll like it.
This form was turned a couple of days ago from a piece of Olive branch I picked up, it is Olive picking season here, so they also prune the trees while they are at it, so branches, crotch pieces and more are to be found on the sides of the roads everywhere in my area.
It took about 4 hours to complete, and considering I film my work so I'll be able to post it to Youtube, the actual work took more like 3 hours (where the sanding takes up the balk of that time). The finish is boiled linseed oil, the sizes are 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) tall from floor to top, the base is 13 cm (5 and 1/4 inches) wide, the widest of the hollow form is 6 cm (2 and 3/8th), it is hollowed all the way to the base, with a hair width below 1/4 of an inch wall thickness.
I'm open to all manner of questions and comments.

I'm not sure if this is ok with the site rules, please let me know if not, but here is a link to the video of this specific project:

Thank you all!

Yuval.

I recently acquired some Olive wood but it is nothing like the colours of this.
Great turning and thank you for sharing.

Thank you Mark for making me feel right at home from the get go! :)
Also, I still don't know why, but my profile doesn't updated anything except for the picture, not even name or location, nothing. It's a plot to leave me a mystery man, I know it!!

Thanks John! I have a storage limitation issue, I've got more wood then I can store without my wife blowing a fuse at me for taking up the back yard with my mess… Olive grows here year round and it's everywhere, so supply is reliable, more or less.

Some people call it luck, I call it… well.. luck, I guess? :) It's always a tense moment when you apply the oil and see all the colors pop up, and the spalting in the grain. It is my favorite wood to turn at the moment.

Finally I managed to update my profile, it seems there was a problem with my signature line, probably too long, so I had to go for the shorter version… :) Thanks again Yu!!

OMG that is absolutely amazing!

I made a "similar" "vase" yesterday that is about 1/1000 as nice as yours. This is very inspirational to me. I'd love to try something like this. How long have you been turning?

Thanks for posting!

Absolutely beautiful!
Good eye for the completion, leaving an artistic flow like the puddling of delicate drapes.
Was the dust shavings as pretty also?
I'd be kicking out the kitchen wares to store more of that wood. (LOL!)
That is an eye pleasing… wow!

Thank you Todd!! Do you have your vase poster here or anywhere else, I would love to see it! I've been turning about 3 years now, but for the first two years I was turning only bowl, it's only since last Christmas that I've started exploring other things. I post all my work on Youtube, including this last project, you can go there and search for a channel with my name (I don't know this site policy, if I can post links to outside sites or not), and see what I did there ;)

Actually the shavings were wonderful too, I always mention this when turning Olive, the smell and colors of the shavings, I wish my shop always smelt of fresh Olive wood, there's nothing quite like it, it's an earthy, primordial smell, after all Olives (and Olive trees) were a staple of our society for ages now.
