Curly maple mirror

Project by ytsejamr posted 138 days ago 405 views 2 times favorited 9 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is my big ol’ mirror I made out of curly maple. It’s about 4’x6’. Nothing too fancy . . . just some molding on the top and bottom.

I made this for two reasons . . . one to fill up the wall, and more importantly, to be able to see the TV from the dining room table!

Looks nice. Is the mirror curved on top or did you just route the back straight to give the appearance?

You are correct . . . it’s a rectangular mirror. The rabbet is rectangular but the top is arched. I figured it would save a little money when ordering the mirror.

Beautiful mirror. Fills the wall space nicely. I am in the process of building my first mirror. Can I assume you went to a custom glass shop to get your glass cut? That will be my last step. Can you give me a ballpark figure on how much the glass costs per square foot? Also, what thickness glass did you use? 1/8” or 1/4”? Thanks, really nice piece.

Yup, got the glass from a local glass/mirror shop. I went with 1/8”, and I added a 1/4” backer board. I did a double rabbet, so I could screw the backer board to the frame, which of course then holds the glass in. The glass store recommended one or the other, either 1/4” glass or 1/8”, with a backer. I don’t remember the exact dimensions, but I spent around $90 for the 1/8”. It was around 36” x 64”. 1/4” would have been double the price. I thought about getting it beveled, but I would have had to get 1/4” and then adding the bevel would have quadrupled the price! Throw in the arch and I would have been looking at $500 for just the mirror. So yeah, I went with 1/8” and no bevel. :-)

if anyone else wants to try this but doesn’t have the money for the mirror glass, u can find remodel companies/craigslist ads giving away TONs of that 1/8” mirror stuff for free…and usually it has no framing, so it’s just cut and build to ur specs….just thought i’d share how i’ve been doing it, for those other budget conscious people out there.
