My brother and wife are having their first child, a girl, so I needed to make something special. This lamp with the dancing giraffes is the result. Now, before anyone gives me an “atta boy” or a slap on the back, I must say that I did not design this little marvel. It is from the John Hutchinson collection. John is having this published in an upcoming Woodcraft Magazine so he asked me to test out the build. I made very few changes except wood type, lamp shade, and I used iron on fabric for the giraffes (wanted pink spots and I don’t paint). The Giraffe necks and head move by 1/8” brass rods inserted perpendicular into necks which are actuated by the 1/8” rotating rods moving up and down on the double cam.

You can see a quick demo on the video below:

Thanks for looking.

FANTASTIC, Todd !!! You da uncle.

The part I like best is that you took something I started and made it yours.
And for that you get two atta boys and slaps on the back.

Very cool build Todd, yes I recognized the wood, I had fun making it and then was stumped what to do with it. My wife loved the cute animation.

Way to go, Uncle Todd! Do the eyes move? You’re gonna be one of those uncles that spoils the nieces and nephews, aren’t you? Carry on!

Sweet!

Besides how cool this whole contraption is, you have given me the idea of iron on fabric. Thank you for that!

Super lamp.

Well, this lamp is way cool! The young niece is going to watch that thing for hours!

(I kinda enjoyed watching it, myself….....!)
