Redwood Deck

I built this deck. It is an hour away so I was not going back to get more pictures, but it looks almost as good in the daylight.

The deck boards, deck rails, and stair treads are garden grade redwood. The structural posts, deck rail posts, stair jacks, ledgers and beams are construction grade redwood. The lattice is made of 1-1/2 inch by 3/8 inch redwood slats. The stairs have a concrete landing at the base. The Homeowners ordered rod iron stair rails, to be installed by the welder.

An interesting fact about the gates was that they were supposed to be rod iron, part of the stair rail order. Mrs Homeowner had me build the pictured gates out of extra material because they did not want to be gateless while they waited for the rod iron. She liked the lattice gates well enough that they decided to nix the rod iron gate.

Note the straight and parallel rows of stainless steel deck screws. They are installed on layout. I think they look better that way.

It is finished with Thompson’s water sealer.

Thanks for looking!

That’s something, John. It must be nice to do something big that someone else pays for.

Thank you Mark. It was a fun build. The people who pay for this stuff will almost never let you keep it though. That’s the life of a professional-ish carpenter. On the other hand, the old deck that I tore out was about the same size and I got to haul a bunch of good pressure treated 2x home!

You built a beautiful deck! Redwood here has become prohibitively expensive. I have 2 redwood decks on my house that are the poster children why Thompson’s Water Seal is useless.

Thanks gfadvm. It is fun to get out and build a deck from time to time.

I would not say that Thompsons is useless, so much as it is not the best. Around here moisture does not become a factor until the sun cooks off the finish. A fresh application of Thompson’s every year or so with a diesel sprayer seems to build faster than it disappears, but the deck will gradually lose the natural redwood look. I have often found that people will buy Thompsons, or a hardware store brand equivalent, because they do not want to wait for a better sealer to cure or spend the money. More often than not, they will have me leave the wood bare and put the finish on themselves.

I have some stuff around here that I linseed oiled once, twenty years ago that have held up well.

Thanks Charles. I only build decks occasionally and I put a lot of effort into them when I do.
