Porter's Bed

Project by GarageWoodworks posted 140 days ago 390 views 2 times favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Hey gang!

I made this bed from cherry for my three year old son Porter. All of the joinery consists of floating tenons including the slats. I was able to find some really nice spalted cherry for a few of the slats. The remaining slats have some really nice pitch pockets that really appeal to me. It is my own design (my wife helped) and is finished with 3-coats of polyurethane (hvlp). This finish should tolerate some abuse from a 3-year old.

I have plenty of in progress pictures at my personal web site, but here are a few below. I was originally going to have a “P” inlayed in the center 6” footboard slat, but I was unhappy with the result and left it out (I batch cut three 6” center slats just in case).

Thanks for looking.

Very Nicely Done! I like the design. What hardware did you use to attach the side rails?

Jim-thanks. I purchased hardware from Woodcraft. http://www.woodcraft.com/product.aspx?ProductID=127456&FamilyID=3269

The hardware is inlayed into the posts and the ends of the rails.

Brian – Thanks for the information. I think I will have to look into that hardware for my next bed.
