Red Oak Studio Easel

I made one of these easels out of walnut for my wife about 4 months ago. It has been a smash with everyone who has seen it, artist or not. I decided to build another one a litter better designed for occasional production and this is it. I chose Red Oak because I had it and it works up nice. I hand made the knobs again but this time I made them on my table saw instead of my router (because now I have a table saw). Each knob secures a setting and only requires a light finger snug to hold everything sturdy. Pic 3 shows the mast in the raised position for larger canvases and pic 4 shows a full sheet of 1/2” plywood being held with ease. The main improvement I made was to make it totally collapsable for storage and shipping. A few minor adjustments and it will be perfect! (Until the next change)

Great Idea and nice choice of wood!

I really like the home made knobs, too.

I bought knobs for the first one i made and went to put them on and I decided for as hard as i worked to make it nice, I wasn’t putting crappy plastic knobs on it so I made my own.

Congrat’s on the table saw :) I’ shoulda made one of these yrs ago. I paint large and often. Very Nice Gift.
Start producing stamp em’ and send em’ to Utrect and other art catalogs. Highlight on different wood types
and custom building. Burn your makers mark in em’ They’re about a cool grand here for a good nice big one.
Looks better than some I’ve priced here.

Nice job ! When you use oak do you utilize a grain filler prior to finishing ? It makes pourous woods smooth as glass when done patiently.

I did not use a filler. I sprayed 2 coats of poly and sanded in between coats. not quite like a filler but it gives a good solid finish and still has the texture of the wood grain.
I have an art supply store in Louisville that is interested in them. I am taking this one to them this week to look at so I hope I can get them moving.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts
