This is made from poplar, stained with “mahogany” stain and finished with two coats of poly for the sides, four for the top. I wish I hadn’t stained it, I liked it better without, but SWMBO wanted it stained!
The top is edged with splined half-lap joints, the splines are walnut, as are the pegs that hold the top to the base. The stringer is a through-tenon.
My first attempt at mortise/tenon joinery, and without a tenoning jig, this was one of the projects that highlighted the limitations of the table saw I’ve been using…
Regardless, the wife and kids are happy with it!

There are so many ways of making a small step stool like this that no two are ever alike. I really enjoy seeing the variety and creativity of each one. Pretty slick guy.

I agree. This is one put together stool. I have been intending to build one for the wifey and this is one that I will consider for sure. Great job.
