Maple finished with Tung oil, leather on the moving face of the vice. I shaped this using only hand tools for the experience, it was cut from rough lumber, sawed and planed by hand only which I really enjoyed. I agonized over spending on the benchcrafted hardware and in the end decided on another route. I purchased metal handwheels, can’t remember from where but they were maybe $8 each, drilled out a hole in each to accept the rods. I bought 1/2” threaded rod from HD, cut to length and epoxied into the handwheels, using two nuts for each rod. I drilled some smaller holes at angles to the main hole for the rods to allow epoxy to get in there and create some “cleats” to help hold the rods in place, not sure how it will hold up over time but so far it’s rock solid. It’s got about a 2” capacity. The wheels actually spin pretty nicely thanks to the weight of the handwheels, I’m happy with it.

Nice one, great for dovetailing.
