Finished.
This is Norm’s “Shaker Wall Clock” (Project #305) done in Peruvian Black Walnut. I’m sure the Shakers would have used Peruvian wood if they could have :-) The knobs are birch (Woodcraft) stained with Minwax Walnut.
I made several modifications (read: huge mistakes) along the way, but I’m relatively pleased with the output. As with all projects, I’ll bring it inside and stare at it for a week or two, then back out to the shop to fix things that annoy me.
I used countersunk 1/8 inch magnets as a catch. I really like the soft pull they give when you tug on the doors. Also, I made the clockface myself (Photoshop, Illustrator) so it’s a little simpler than the classic concentric circle design so often seen (and which I really don’t like!). Also, it’s cool that the dial has my own name on it.
Movement is quartz. Still trying to decide what I’ll store in the lower half.
