Intertwined captive rings Irish goblet

After posting an Irish goblet on FaceBook, a friend who practices Karate with me noted, sort of by the way, that she was about to celebrate a 13th wedding anniversary. Nonchalant, but with less than a hint of a hint…

So…

I turned this goblet from a branch of Pistacia palestina (or lentiscus, not sure).

I turned two integral rings, but then decided to break one loose, only to recaptivate it, intertwined with its mate ring. You figure out the symbolysm….

Finished with shellac (I make my own cut), and presented in gift wrap…

Thanks for watching!

Hi There Yuval,
That is a wonderful goblet. It will be a cherished gift I’m sure. I really like the idea of intertwining the rings. That really makes it special.

Hi Linda!
I guess the intertwining is a little different, havn’t seen it anywhere else (does not necessarily mean no one has ever done it, though…)
The couple likes it, so I’m happy!
Thank you!

You must have been a little nervous, looks fragile, turned out great!

- John

Well, hell, yes! At least around that bead, where I got very near the pith. If you try hard enough it will surrender… but it rather rigid, not really fragile.

Thanks John!

Yuval,

Love the goblet – and the interlocked rings! Looks like a carving challenge for me (since I still don’t have my lathe up and running). Let me ponder on that one a bit and get back to you!

Well, Mike? Any outcome from that pondering, I’m wodering?
(I somehow missed this post, sorry).
Happy you like the goblet!
Since my carving skills are limited, I won’t even try…. Not impossible, surely…
Cheers!
