Dining Table and Chairs

Project by Andy Brownell posted 129 days ago 490 views 1 time favorited 19 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Dining Table and Chairs in Cherry. Table is 42×86”, and 6/4 thick highly figured stuff, which was tough to finish, but totally worth it, especially in the sunlight.
The chairs are a design from Jeff Miller’s Book “Chairmaking and Techniques”, by Taunton publishing. This batch of chairs was my first personal project that required more of a production mentality to the construction process.

Wow! The grain in that cherry is beautiful! What size is the table?

Wow! Beautiful table! My wife is looking to have me build our kitchen table. I will show her this. If she likes the look, would you have plans that you are able to share?

Andy this is a gorgeous dining table and chairs. I enjoy this style of furniture and cherry happens to be my personal favorite wood-so what is not to like about this project.

How did you finish these pieces?

Hand rubbed Watco Danish Oil. Natural finish.
Progressive wet sanding with 220, 320, 400, then 600 grits.
Finish with butchers wax with 0000 steel wool, let dry for 10 minutes, buff by hand with cloth.
Not as durable as a Poly finish, but makes repairs a lot easier.

Andy,

That is a nice set, really pretty. How bout a couple photos of the underside, I’m interested in how you built the apron and legs and how you attached everything together. 85 inches long you say, it doesn’t look like you have any center legs, are you worried about sag? What is the size of the long side aprons?

Very nice dinning set. That cherry is only going to get better with age. Thanks for the post.

Beautifully done! I love the simple lines of the table and chairs as they allow the beautiful figured wood to dominate the room. My type of furniture.
