I designed this unit to hold my stationary and drawing equipment, so the large drawers are big enough to comfortably hold A4 paper and french curves, the smallest to hold pens and so on, and the medium ones for staplers, hole punch etc. It is intended to sit open on a flat-top table and act as home office storage. Currently all these items live in the drawers of a large desk that will not be moving house with me.
Outer case is 17mm CD grade construction (pine) ply, drawer fronts and rails are eucalyptus saligna (blue gum). I picked out the darker lengths of saligna to make a pattern on the front. Machine cut dovetails but customised and finished by hand. I had a play with carving a pattern in the outer sides, just for fun. Outer case is deliberately ‘industrial’. I like the contrast of outside and inside, and the golden colour of the ply (oiled and waxed) against the pink of the saligna.
Not intended as fine furniture – but happy to have it in my house.

Sharyn,
Looks like your office storage unit turned out really nice. Well engineered.

I too, like the contrast of the rough, industrial exterior and the fine interior. Sort of like the wrights chests of old. They would get bunged up in their travels, but when they opened it up all of their finest work would be on display.
Great design and execution.
