I’m posting this as an entry for The Garden contest. The materials are 2X8X16 redwood. I built the pergola from a plan I bought from Wood magazine. The post were the biggest hurdle to overcome. The money Lowes/Home Depot wanted for 6×6X12 redwood post was ridiculous. So I laminated three 2X6’s together and ran the router down the space between the boards to kind of hide the fact that they were glued together then took the spacing from those two lines and put the grooves down on the face and back sides to match. Once the outside boards were installed it was just a matter of making the “ladders” for the inside. The deck was another challenge-She had to have the deck even with the concrete walkway in back – No Stairs. I dug down about 18 inches and installed 12X12X4” concrete pads used to go under trailer jacks. I put short post on these and framed the deck. I had removed most of the soil under the deck but there were still places I had to “trench” for the joists. This was my first deck experience and I believe it will be my last. Sorry I don’t have pics of the work in progress, just didn’t think to take them. Thanks for looking.

It looks great! I think the tree agrees…It’s got a great big smile on it! Sounds like a lot of work putting that deck in.

maybe the work that went into digging offset not having to buy the materials for and built railings. Nice open design for the space. A pergola of some type is on my mental “to do” list. Just as soon as I can figure out where it’ll go.
Very nice.

Sounds like it was quite a bit of work. I really hope the ground is not too rocky. It turned out beautiful.

Wow!!! That looks great. We have been planning on making something like this for the house we just bought. The front door faces West and is painted black. It wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t live were when the summer temperatures dip below 100, we consider that a cold spell. I will be looking for that plan…Thanks for sharing
-- Sure Dear, I can make that for you. Lemme just run out and get a tool I need for that.
