Dovetail - Walnut, Sycamore Desk Box

Project by jason434 posted 148 days ago 682 views 4 times favorited 12 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Hello Everyone –
First, I wanted to thank everyone for the warm welcome on my last project, thank you for all the wonderful comments!

Ok so here is the second project that I have posted to LumberJocks. A friend asked me to build a desk box and this is what I came up with, as always comments are encouraged and welcome.

Body of the box is Walnut
Top of the box is 1/4 Spalted sycamore – I thought this wood went extremely well with the walnut body.
Bottom of box is English Yew Veneer and black Suede was used for the lining.
Lid Pull is Maple – I wanted some contrast from the walnut
I decided to use barrel hinges since I ran out of brusso hinges (need to pick up some more, I still like brusso hinges the best.

Finish Recipe:
I actually used pumice and a 50 cut of shellac to fill some of the grain since I didn’t have any grain filler at the time. looking back I wish i waiting and picked up some grain fill but I think the result came out well. After I filled the grain I simply applied 3 coats of danish oil and then waxed and polished out the box.

Any question please feel free to ask and again comments are welcome as I love to hear what you all have to say.

I hope you enjoy this project as much as the last one.

Regards,
Jason

That is absolutely gorgeous. The dovetails are darker. Is that because that is the end grain absorbing more of something. Very nice proportions. What are the dimensions?

Did you make the body & lid together then bandsawed it or did you do them seperately? Looks very nice and clean.

Thank you everyone for the comments I appreciate them very much!!

kcrandy – Yes as you suspected the dovetails are darker at the end grain this is from the amount of oil that is absorbed at this part of the lumber. I have to check the dimensions again for you but as with most of my boxes if possible i try to use Phi (Golden Ratio =- 1.618) this proportions seems to work extremely well and appeasing to the eye

orbit308 – The box was made in 1 piece then separated on the tablesaw, I do not use a band saw to separate boxes I find the marks left behind are deep and take more work to clean up. I like useing the table saw with a tiny splitter and then i set up sandpaper on granite and smooth down the saw marks this always has worked better than using any hand plane (for me at least)

Again thank you all for your wonderfull comments I look forward to sharing my next project with everyone
