A seemingly mundane project, but one of my most challenging. the specification was for no two stair treads or flooring planks to look alike. I produced 4 prototypes, three of which were rejected by the architect for not being authentic looking. Once we agreed on a particular look, he then said that’s great, now no 2 can look alike. Hand hewn, solid black oak, water borne stain, cross linked Enduro finish. All the base boards, trim, and casement match this stuff and as the light catches it, it shows off the quarter sawn ray fleck and burl. Every floor plank was hand worked. To walk up the steps with the changing deep wood light reflection, was well worth the time and effort. the owners say this is one of their favourite parts of the house.

I wish people gave me that stipulation! I’m already a master at each piece coming out completely unlike the last :)
It looks really pretty. I would love a rustic, dark hardwood floor.

I think it is interesting how people with no money want new looking stuff and people with money want old looking stuff.

Very nicely done. I like your hardwood treads very much
I’m also in progress of milling & dimensioning lumber for the stair treads of the garrage to living room’s staircase. However, I’m still in doubt of how to put the hardwood treads to the concrete staircase already built – (due to lack of detailed specs.)
If any of you have better idea (whether to use lumber glue or screws) – your suggestion would be highly appreciated.
Sorry Rob for using yor thread..!
Thanks, Rob and everyone of LJs member.

Thanks everyone for looking and giving me your comments. Christopher: It is true, oh so true! I am still chuckling over your comment! Woodworm: These treads are made up of carefully selected, edge glued, narrower pieces, paying attention to grain, orientation. The same as you would a solid wood table top. The thicker edges are additional wood (wrapped around) the basic stair tread. They look like one solid hunk of wood, but they are in fact many pieces with the goal of balancing out wood stresses. and of course making them look like they have been there for 100 years. People really like that solid, heavy wood look, but will scream bloody murder if cracks and wood movement appear. There is special adhesive available for stair treads that is both strong and elastic. These treads were glued down.

Looks great! I just finished a simular project except I cheated using pre-finished flooring.
