I like the commentary and it is definitely a question that I have talked about with my father, who is an artist. Jim says that to be a good artist/craftsman you have to be good at the other, but I don’t believe that to be the case, but that’s just one man’s opinion. Even when it comes to woodworking, this doesn’t necessarily apply. A good craftsman can pick up a set of plans and with the right tools can follow the plans and produce a nice looking object, where’s the art in that? Now, the person who designed the plan may have a great eye for proportion and lines for style and appealing to look at, but they may not be able to cut a straight line with a table saw. Artist? yes, but craftsman? definitely not. So, I see the two as mutually exclusive. What do you call it when a person posses both craftsmanship and the ability to create something unique? I don’t really have an answer for that, does it matter? I do have to agree with Jim on one point “probably not”.
Beautiful box and pens, by the way. I’d love to see more detail on the box.

I could swear i read this exact commentary in a magazine 3 weeks ago or so. The author then went on to describe how a japanese instructor told a story about a man who instead of making an artistic rendition of the shoe the class was supposed to represent, he made the match to the shoe creating a pair. His family was cobblers, and this raised a question as to if it was art or craft…
