Figured Mahogany - From an Unusual Place

The figured Mahogany sides on this box started out as painted drawer fronts I found on the side of the road. The fronts were painted a solid dark chocolate brown, with foam applique. Only a small band of the drawer contained the figured grain. The Mahogany is old-grown South American.

I wanted to highlight the sides, so I inset the top.

Also my first foray into a curved veneet top. I milled the radius with a router.

(The stock was about 5/16 by this point, ie I had to resaw, so the splines had to be external.)

Once in a lifetime find. So I gave the box to my brother.

Regards, Ardbeg Mike

Awesome box!! On which road do you look for this kind of wood? ;-)

the box turned out great. Its beautiful and sort of exotic looking. I can only imagine what was going through your head when you figured out what kind of wood you had discovered.

WOW! That is some beautiful figure! This is why I wouldn’t want to work in a furniture factory. It break my heart to put paint on the likes of this. You’ve transformed it into an heirloom! Thanks for sharing, Mike.

That’s some spectacular looking wood! The veneer on the lid is special as well but I don’t have a clue what it is???
