The figured Mahogany sides on this box started out as painted drawer fronts I found on the side of the road. The fronts were painted a solid dark chocolate brown, with foam applique. Only a small band of the drawer contained the figured grain. The Mahogany is old-grown South American.
I wanted to highlight the sides, so I inset the top.
Also my first foray into a curved veneet top. I milled the radius with a router.
(The stock was about 5/16 by this point, ie I had to resaw, so the splines had to be external.)
Once in a lifetime find. So I gave the box to my brother.
