Built these beds for my two little girls. My wife wanted pallet beds because that is the in thing now… to have everything look like pallets? So my response was “I am not using pallets for my girls beds!... but I will make them look like pallets”. Seems ironic typing that, building something to look like a pallet. Anyways so they are made with 2X4’s for the frames of the head and footboards, 1×4’s for the headboard and footboard slats, 1×6’s for the bed rails with 2×2’s for the rails to hold the mattress rails (used scrap wood I had for these slats).
Joinery on the frames are butt joints and pocket screws. The slats are nailed to the frames to give the pallet look. the bed rails are connected to the frames with 2 screws each and the mattress slats are secured to the bed rails with 1” Kreg pocket screws (I recessed the holes for each screw using the Kreg bit in the drill press).
This was the first project in which I used my Fuji semi-pro paint sprayer. There is 1 coat of Kilz 2 primer and 1 one of Behr semi gloss. I thinned each following the recommendation on the cans and used the Aircap set #5 (1.8mm) needle and it worked great. Consistent spray and even coat.
The girls love there new beds and Mom is pleased (that is most important right!?). Someday I will convince my wife that a good stain on quality hardwood is appealing and attractive but until then, a couple coats of paint will do to make her happy.
