My fireplace was listed “as is” when I bought the house and after inspecting it I found the firebox was full of cracked bricks. I did not want to sped a bunch of money to have it repaired and gas or wood inserts were also pretty expensive so I decided to get an electric insert. I insulated and sealed off the chimney to stop drafts and then built a platform out of scrap material for the insert to sit on in the firebox and built a frame out of select pine boards to cover the remaining gap around the electric insert. I painted it flat black to blend with the electric fireplace and to give it a metal look so it would just look like an insert.
