Here are a few boxes that I have made recently. Whilst most of my projects are bigger than these, it is boxes that give me a lot of pleasure. The box at the back comproses of four smaller boxes – a base, sitting on this a larger box, an on this two smaller boxes. The light timber is huon pine, and the darker is wenge.

The three small boxes in front of the huon pine box are all made from Camphorlaurel; two with spalted sassafras lids and the third having a blackwood lid. The pulls are from Americam wallnut.

The box along the wall has a body made from Victorian Ash with the contrasting timber American wallnut.

The two boxes at the front each have Victorian ash for the ends, with one having the sides made from American wallnut and the other having its sides made from jarra. In both cases the lid insert is from camphorlaurel.

The huon pine and the three small boxes are all finished with white shellac followed by a paste wax. The remaining boxes finished using a Danish oil followed by natural wax.

Thanks for looking.

-- Bob

Those are really nice Bob. Beautiful wood and the proportions are spot on.

Sweet boxes. There’s something really comforting about making a nice perfectly squared up box.

I like how the two boxes under the lid (of the box in the back) have their dovetails lined up creating a “butterfly.” Did you design that? Nice work!

Bob, this is truly beautiful and original work. What a great idea of combining three boxes into one. How do these fit into each other?

Great work, Mate!

Oh, and in case you didn’t know – I just love small wooden boxes - and these are especially nice!

“How do these fit into each other?” – Don

Don I can’t take full credit for the design of the huon pine box. It is based on one made by Roger Gifkin of dovetail jig fame. Each huon pine bix is milled to the same thickness. The wenge top and base are cut so that they are a little longer and wider than the HP boxes. The bottom HP box has a rebate cut around the base so that it fits into the wenge bottom box/base. The two smaller top HP boxes have a base that extends below the bottom of their sides. This enables then to fit into the lower box. Also, the top of each of the smaller HP boxes has a rebate around their top. This allows the wenge top to sit down on these boxes. If I could work out how to add additional photos without having to creat a URL I would add them to this post.

Bob, have you tried a hosting site such as Flickr? It is pretty easy to do and to use.

Napaman, go for it. I used to think that box making was trivial compared to making real furniture. Wrong! After my first attempt I realised that one has to be real careful as this item is picked up and inspected at close range. Little room for error as it is touched, inspected, smelt, turned over, and compared. Not even an expensive chest of drawers is looked at so closely. Other than be fellow woodworkers. But the saatisfaction is tremendous.

These are great! Did you have plans or just make them on the fly?

Lboy, No plans as such. I had a description and some instructions for the huon pine box (Roger Gifkin), the box against the wall was from Freedman’s book, and the remaining are simple boxes that were almost a batch run.

Thanks for the details, Bob. If I may piggyback on your project, I thought that fellow LJ’s might like to learn more about Roger Gifkins whom you reference above.
