Three-dimensional "four stones in a row", 立体4目並べ

Project by Junji posted 160 days ago 639 views 4 times favorited 24 comments Add to Favorites Watch

It has been a while but this was another gift for my son’s seventh birthday.

It’s called “Rittai yonmoku narabe” (立体4目並べ) which means Three-dimensional “four stones in a row”.

I think many of you know a game “Tic-tac-toe”, “three stones in a row”. And we also have “five stones in a row” using GO board, just like a chess board, and black and white stones.

And this one is another version of this kind. Only 4 balls but four dimension, so either black or white (or brown) who gets 4 balls in a row wins. But any row, a horizontal, vertical, diagonal, down, across, or even “Down and diagonal”.

There are product just like this, but I wanted to make it myself. The game is really really fun even for adults, once you start it, you have to be really careful because sometimes you get a line without knowing at all.

To make them, pretty much easy except for the 64 balls. I bought the wooden balls at 100 yen shop. (They sell 16 balls = 100 yen, good deal) Opened a center hole each using a little jig and a drill press. Then after that I wondered how to make half of them dark… Then one idea came across, “Burn Them!!!” (because I didn’t have any dark finishing oil…) Well, they came out OK, but I guess it was much better using really dark oil, because it took so long to take the soot or charcoal, whatever where it burned too much. Since they are small balls (30mm), not easy to hold with your hand, but I had to clean up with paper so long…

Well, my son is also happy about this game, but at the same time, this has been bringing a good bar time for me and my wife.

patron,
If I can care my family with my woodworking, that will be my honer. But sometimes I can’t take good care because I spend too much time in the shop!!!
Yes, I do believe my kids will remember these gifts better than products we just buy.

Neat little game, Junji. Try some India ink sometime, for a black dye, then seal with oil finish.
Thanks for the post.

Junji,
It looks like one of those games that can become addictive! Your kids will remember what you make for them.

Neat game, next time you want to try making wood dark, Sumi works beautifully. Makes the wood look like ebony when you put a glossy top coat on it. Oh yeah loved the clocks you posted recently too.

Indeia Ink, I have never heard of it, but seems like almost the same thing we called SUMI just like Skarp is saying.

Don,
Yes, you really become addictive. Last night my sister n law came over, and we just started this game as I wanted to show her what it is like. I was just showing so thought maybe 2-3 games, but she kept losing and couldn’t stop it finally until her kids asked her to go… And at last she asked me to bring the game with me the next time we go their house.

Scrappy,
This is a kind of games you can play at any age, so I hope my son will keep it long. I also have some extra balls when he loses some…

Happy fathers day to you too!
You must have a huge “what to make ” list, and that sounds really nice.

Junji, Thanks for the post. My parents had a game like this, forgot all about it. May have to think about making one as my daughter is currently working on learning to play tic-tac-toe.

Curiosity though what are the smaller pegs on the side used for? scoring?

Chris,
Yes, I made those little pieces for scoring. Only one ends have black inlay. So you win 3 games, you get one set. (but you don’t actually need it)
Guessing from your ID photo, your cute little baby looks like 1-2 years old, but she should have been older than that if she is learning to play tic-tac-toe. By the way, my daughter “three years old” also like this game, she is always throwing the balls everywhere. Well, everybody has so many different ways to enjoy it!

Yes Junji, I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. I wake up in a good mood every morning and stay that way all day, day after day, year after year:-)) The only time I didn’t was when I was OD’d on Topamax :-((
