My third project goes in hand with my new start as a gardener (I use the term ‘gardener’ pretty loosely at the moment!!) While it was still pretty nasty here in Washington – as it is most of the year – I decided to try starting some seeds before the last frost in the garage. The seed stand is three tier and uses dual hanging shop lights (one standard bulb and one heat bulb) to provide the light. I put it on a timer and the seeds get light 12 to 14 hours of light a day. Not the sturdiest of projects but very useful. We just finished cleaning out some of the garage and a couple rooms in the house so there is other furniture crowding around the stand at the moment… never a dull moment when you don’t have enough space, eh!

Nice job Steve. Looks like the beginning of a satisfying woodworking career. The weather where I live is almost identical to Washington. I find the rainy days a big advantage, as I am free from gardening, house painting and a whole lot of other outdoor tasks. This leaves me free to be in my shop doing woodworking. It certainly helps me to defeat the gloom.

A little cluttered at the moment or I am trying my hand at growing yarn, keyboards and wireless routers from cuttings as well!
Now, the thought comes to mind, is it me or do all woodworkers look at each others projects and then at their own and think they could have done a lot better? I don’t know if I am being hyper critical of my work (knowing I am as close to newbie as it gets in this hobby) or what, but I finish a project and am not satisfied yet…

By the screen name I assume you are or were a brother behind the badge and well as fellow service member. Just couldn’t help to check if any of the plants had too many and too narrow a leaf that look a lot like a young tomato plant. Glad to see it looks like a clean grow op. Welcome to woodworking. I understand the never quite satisfied feeling with each project. The MRS tells me, no one will see the defects if I would stop pointing them out. Enjoy and learn from each project. I’ve been at it for years and learn something every time.

BTKS,
I am a first class petty officer Master-at-Arms with a background in force protection and anti-terrorism. Looking to retire sometime come January or February I think. It is about time for me a it just isn’t the same anymore and I am really getting out of the mindset. In the long run I pride myself with having done my time!
Good eye on the plants. I have cherry tomato’s coming up in the fiber pots(the larger ones) and something else which I forgot to mark in the smaller ones. A flower I believe. I do have some Roma tomato plants ready to transplant outside as well as some Black Eyed Susans. My snapdragons are coming up a touch slower. Once those are done I am going to play around with some herbs. A lot of this will continue through the year as I work on my technique. I will be building some inside planters for the garage to grow during the off months and continue to play with it. Along with the woodworking, this is my first year of really working on the garden (both flower and vegetable). We will see what comes of it!

Steve, Welcome to LumberJocks. Looks like a good useful build, which I believe are some of the best.
Good luck with the gardening. i may have to borrow the concept for next year as I recently built several raised beds for my wife so she may pursue a vegetable garden in our small yard.

NavyCop68, Retired last August myself, 21 years of combined active and reserve in the MP Corp. Know what you mean about the mindset. Same thing with force protection and anti-terrorism mostly in the civilian world. Good to know like minded, like interested public servants out there. Wife and I garden avidly, okay mostly the wife on the garden but the wood shop is all mine. What is the grade of petty officer? Never been competent with navy ranks. All my time ground poundin or humvee’s. Later, BTKS

BTKS,
Petty officer is the grade above E-3 or most notably E-4 to E-6 (Petty officer third, second and first class respectively) then comes the senior enlisted grades of Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief and Master Chief. I am up for Chief Petty Officer this year (second time up) and will find out if I make it in late July. Not too hopeful so will retire as an E-6 more than likely!
As for the hobbies, most of them are mine actually. The wife is too busy working or going to school (working on her masters degree) but when she does hobby it is scrapbooking, knitting and stained glass with me. With her impending layoff at the end of the month and the economy as it is right now we have scaled back our hobbies pretty huge, sadly, but I am still plugging away with a few things. I know that my son needs to build something for one of his cub scout projects so I thought of building bird houses as well. Not a lot of cost for the wood and you can get creative with it. Will see where that takes me too!!

Good luck on the E-7, and thanks for the primer on Navy ranks. Hope the masters degree will assist in new employment prospects. Best of luck, can’t wait to see new projects. I recently finished a bird house my oldest daughter (4yrs old) designed and helped build. It was time well spent and hopefully the first of a lot of time we’ll spend in the shop. The story and pics are posted in my projects.
