Here is a little Domino Set I made one day when I was in between projects. It was a quick
one day project that turned into two days.
The box is made from birdseye maple with a tung oil finish. It was my first attempt at a sliding top.
The dominos are made from boxwood (South American) while the spots and lines are inlayed with gabon ebony. They have no finish, just buffed to a nice satin finish.
For those who have not seen it already, I took the pictures on top of the hope chest I made.

Wonderful. I love the inlay work on the dominos. Are you using a small router, drill or some other means to cut the inlay?

Gary, this is a terrific project. I can tell you it would take me more than two days to make those Dominoes.
The box is lovely – I just love small wooden boxes!

Love your dominoes! I’ve made a set in the past and for something that looks so ‘simple’ to make, they sure are time consuming. They are great; keep up the very good work.

Amazing work Gary. The attention to detail you exhibit is astonishing.
I love the dominoes and the box but what is the table you photographed it on….beautiful figure in the wood.

WayneC – Having a small metal working mill makes it easier to make the holes for the inlays. I used a small center cutting end mill. I also used a small slot cutting saw blade to cut the slot for the line. The boxwood will not chip out which is a good thing.
Like cobbie says they are very time consuming. Rounding over the edges seemed to take forever.

Thanks Gary, I would never have thought of using a mill. I need to spend a little time metal working to get a different perspective.

Very nice and uncanny. While on vacation last week, we were in a cafe with board games for customers to use to pass the time. One of the items was a domino set in a wood box, just like this. My wife’s cousin said “You’ll make us one of those for Christmas.” She’s a sweetheart and I suppose I will ;)

Very nice set Gary. A great looking box, and the dominos are good too.
Is there some pattern for the numbering of the dominos? I mean, how do you know what number combinations should go together, or is it just make your own up?

Beautiful set of Dominos!!!! And the box too!!!
We play dominos when on break at work. I am planning to make dominos for the rest of the crew so I bought the domino jig from Rockler. Have you had any experience with the Rockler jig?
