Turned out pretty good? Wow! You have an impressive capacity to understate! This is an awesome table. That finish just pops!

Beautiful workmanship. The top is soooo glossy, I had to do a dboule-take to figure out the picture above was reflecting on the top.

Hello and Thanks!
I used Trans Tint Medium Brown Dye mixed with water, 2 coats of Bolied Linseed Oil, 4 coats of Behlens Rockhard Table Top Varnish on the under carriage and 7 coats on the table top – I reduced the varnish by 40% to allow for easy flow. I sanded with 220 grit between coats.

Dale, Great looking table, I noticed the legs though, would you give us a description on how you made them? Are they solid core or hollow? An amateur wants to know.
Thanks

Ahh the legs….I couldn’t justify the cost of buying 4”x4” solid maple stock, so I glued up 5 maple boards that were 3/4 thick x 3” wide to make the core of the leg then I ran them through the jointer on one side and then ran the other side through the planer to square them up. After that I glued a 3/4” x 4” board on each side of the core to cover all of the edges of the core. When the legs were assembled I planed them to 3 1/2” square on the planed and jointer. It was messy during the glue up and I think I used 24 clamps on each leg!

Wood Joinery – Let’s get technical – but without glues, metal nails, screws or other mechanical fasteners! Yes, this is the “WOOD JOINERY” challenge for all you LumberJocks out there. Let’s see what you are made of – or rather what your woodworking project is made of. If you can build it with screws, you can build it without. Pure and Simple: Envision it, build it, enter it. Note that entries in this category should have at least one joint and NO glue or mechanical fasteners should be used to create the joint(s).

Obi – We are each entitled to our interpretation of the rules – I assume that is what you are getting at. The close up of the joints that you see has NO GLUE. The through tennon is a snug fit and NO GLUE. The spindles are another very tight fit with NO GLUE.
While I did use glue to laminate the legs together, there is no real joinery involved in that and I wanted to submit my table on the basis of the earlier mentioned joints. If you feel this is unfair or unjustified I would have no problem removing my project(s) from the contest and therefore the site.
Good day.

Dale, My apologies… I saw the glue process of the legs, and misunderstood it. As long as the joinery has no glue, then it’s a 10. Excellent job.

Hi Dale;
—-I guess that when I see glue used, I see a ‘wood joint’ that is in need of a fastener....
Now what I am getting at, is that by your own words;”while I did use glue to laminate the legs together, there is no real joinery involved in that....” Correct me if I am wrong, but as I stated yesterday on LumberJocks Woodworking Awards Summer 2007, “To my way of understanding ‘wood joinery’ and correct me if I’m wrong, when laminating one piece of wood to another….this is also called a ‘face joint’….”
”Note that entries in this category should have at least one joint and NO glue or mechanical fasteners should be used to create the joint(s).”
Thank you.
GODSPEED,
Frank

A beautiful table Dale, it may not be following the rules, but let the voters decide.
They’ll be the judge of things, & let you know if you’re wrong.
That’s one way of possibly settling the dispute.
