Hi All, Well as you can see by the title this is the first of a few projects I plan to post. The only reason I choose this one is it is current. My wife has wanted new living room furniture for a while. We went to Woodworkers Source and she looked over the entrance wall for the type of wood she wanted. ” Brown tones with lighter shades or grain” I had suggested cherry, she didn’t like the red in it, I suggested walnut and she said it was too dark, hence the trip to Woodworkers Source. We got the map of the woods on the wall and she started looking. She points to a short board about 12 feet up and off to the left. We check the map – American Walnut, she gives me a look like I had rigged the wall or something. She was determined to not buy it because I had suggested it though she won’t admit it. LOL So we continue looking at the wall she passed on Birch, bacote, Ash and a few others. She was getting a little flustered until she spies a board on the bottom right of the check out desk, look she says, that’s the perfect color right there, out comes the map and you guessed it Black walnut. We had a good laugh over it. Out we went and bought a 6” wide board 12/4 thick by 80” long. I’m making a total of 5 tables but three have the same legs Talk about sticker shock, I thought she was gonna pass out.
I had a few choices for the template for the cabriole legs. I bought a back issue of Woodsmith that had a template but it didn’t look right once I drew it out. I downloaded another pattern from somewhere and it didn’t look right either. Finally I was in Boarders and Greenes book titled, {American Furniture of the 18th. Century}, in it he gives the complete description for making Cabriole legs. Not just a quick “do this, do that” kind of tutorial, but a guide for the dimensions and how they relate to one another. The methods are a little dated but material is excellent. I hope you enjoy my first installment. More to come.
Later,
Doug in AZ.

Very impressive work! Thanks for that source on the legs. I’ve never seen a really good description of now to do it. Just basic ones that might just leave you on the edge of a precipice, not knowing which way to turn. Thanks. Again, beautiful work!

Great job Doug. Imagine making not just one leg, but enough for 5 tables. It looks like good things are ahead for the tables. Just wait until you buy that walnut for the tops!

Just out of curiosity…How bad was the sticker price? I think it is great that your wife selected wood that you had suggested, too. You’ve made some very nice legs. I can’t wait to see the rest! Thanks for the story and the pictures and link.

Thanks for the compliments all.
Mot-In the book he gives the dimensions in percentages, makes life much easier.
Bill-This is a batch for 3 of the 5. The other 2 will be much different, a half round entrance table and a tall and skinny “display” table.
Oscorner-$240.00 all told. The legs figure at 1.5 bf each. I had some waste -prolly 7 or 8 %.

Great looking legs… I can’t wait to see the finished products. $240 isn’t bad…I can’t even get my hands on walnut without ordering online and paying through the nose for shipping.

Thanks for showing me how to do that Douginaz, I thought I had to offset the stock center and use a rasp. The slab looks awesome too! I wood like milling that to pieces.
