Here is my second attempt at relief carving. It is a portrait for a client who owns this World Champion Morgan horse affectionately known as “Buttwheat”. The reference material photos were taken several years ago, but I have always found the image striking and was compelled to attempt a likeness when he recently retired from the show ring.
It is carved in alder to a depth of about 3/8”. I wish that there were more photos of the actual carving to share, but photographing it with the proper lighting proved more difficult than actually carving the piece. The “frame” around the portrait was intended to be a simple oval. The imbalanced elipses and upper floral carving were a last ditch effort to save the carving after a major router tearout destroyed the all-but-finished carving.
