As we start to build our flower garden in our backyard, I designed and built this Pergola. It’s built of Western Red Cedar. Soon after finishing the Pergola I added the glider (based on one featured in WOOD magazine). My wife and I now use the Pergola and Glider as a place for quiet reading or reflection. It has been a very welcome addition to our home.

Chet that’s a ton of work , well executed.
There are joints everywhere.
How long did it take to build it?
What lumber did you use.
What did it cost?

Bob,
If you don’t count the time for the foundation work (cement caissons), it took about a week and a half to build the Pergola. I took a week off work and did the bulk of the work and then finished it in the evenings that followed. Since all the wood is clear western red cedar, it was ridiculously expensive (approx $1,500). But what the heck, we really like it.
The are a good many joints (most of them half lap with some mortice and tenon as well) – perhaps I should have entered it in the joinery contest instead of the garden furniture contest :)
Matt,
The glider is also made of western red cedar. I built it over two weekends and it provides a really gentle and comfortable swinging motion.
Thanks again for the kind words.

That’s a great build! Did you gang up the tops for the dados or did you build some sort of jig?

Mot,
For the trellis work I gang cross-cut the dados and ripped the pieces to width.
For the structural pieces, I built a jig. Basically I would put the piece in place, mark the dados with a knife, pull the piece back down and use the jig to router them out. I’m not sure it was the most efficient but it was super accurate.

Yes Yes I believe it could be a winner in either the joinery category or the garden project category. Each piece is a great stand alone project but the two together really compliment each other. Good idea on cutting the dados then ripping, even if they’re off a hair they will all still be perfectly parallel. The more I look the more I’m impressed with the craftmanship. You have to give up your techique on the perfectly curved pieces.

$1500.. my first thought was “gulp”.. but then I watched the video and “when you only got 100 years to live” then, why not?? If you want it. Build it. No regrets!
It’s beautiful and an inspiration. (Great video too)

Very Nice, I am sure my wife would love one. She has been a lot of help in the shop when re refinish/fix antique furniture. I will have to find that article and see if she would want to build it. We have many flowers throughout the yard and on the porch of the shop.

Mitch, What finish did you use?
I LOVE the color of W.R.C. when it is new. Are you letting it “gray out” or are you going to try and maintain the color in the photos? If so, I would love to know to know how your going about it.

Dan,
I use a light cedar stain on the WRC. On the good side, it really keeps the color strong, on the bad side (the very bad side), I need to restain each year.
I have several other WRC pieces in the yard (including the deck) so I can say that it does work but it is a pain in the a__ each year to re-stain.

Dick,
Thanks for your kind words.
I sandwiched the Trellis pieces between two pieces, each of which has half the mortice cut out. The Trellis itself is made by simple half laps.
