Few months ago, I asked a metal turner friend to make a locking chuck for me. To make it clear for what I wanted, I made the locking chuck out of timber as in photo # 5. My friend copied my wooden sample into a metal one. Only yesterday I tested it for the first time and turned this little lidded box. The idea of this chuck is that its little piece in front will lock the timber as soon as the lathe turns on and then you can shape it the way you like. All you have to do first is to drill the timber in the same diameter of the chuck, in this case 25 mm. It was a successful result.

That is real good idea, Sam. I’ll have to make one. What is the range for holding on that one?? If it were bigger than 1” inside, would it still hold well?
Morse #2 Taper??
Cheers, Jim

Jim, you’ve chosen the right title, internal lock chuck. No, it would not hold bigger than 25mm. You may use it to hold a bigger blank, like a bowl, to prepare the bottom of it. This one is #2 taper.
