Extreme Birdhouse # 29

Project by john posted 861 days ago 2266 views 1 time favorited 57 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Hi everyone
Here is my latest extreme birdhouse.
This is made from 70 yr old reclaimed barn wood and stands 6 ft tall.
It has 10 decks , 6 dormers and 76 rooms.
The towers and insides are all removable for easy cleaning. The insides are all made from reclaimed plywood from shipping crates and the steel was leftover from a barn .
This birdhouse will be mounted on a single post 8-9 ft in the air.
All of my birdhouses are made from reclaimed barn wood .

We just started feeding the birds on the back yard. I may have to think about creating a new home for all the little flying winged things :) How long did it take you from start to finish on this project?

Hi snowdog
This house took me 2 weeks from start to finish.
I started by scraping off the wood and pulling the old nails then i ran all the wood through the planer.
I filled 15 garbage bags just with the wood shavings and sawdust. It took about 5 hrs to cut all the wood into logs .
Each stick goes through the tablesaw 3 times to give it the log look.
I also cut all the windows and doors at the same time.
I then draw a layout on a piece of plywood marking all the rooms for each floor then i let the sticks fly. Things go pretty quick because i always follow the same steps for each house.

I think you must have ALL the birds. Otherwise how do you keep the neighborhood kids from using them as clubhouses? 6 Feet tall, another at 9 feet? you must also have really BIG birds too!

This is great.

Thanks scott
I get kids asking me all the time if i can make them a playhouse like that.

In the last 2 years i have noticed a huge increase in birds in my area including 400- 500 purple martins that i just noticed hanging around.
I am finishing up the 9 ft birdhouse now and it should be ready soon.

I like using reclaimed wood, It looks great and best of all it,s all free.
The only downfall is it takes considerably more work to prepare the wood.
My father use to make us pull nails all the time from reclaimed wood so now it just comes natural to do it now.
It,s also a good feeling to know that your giving it another chance to shine.

Hi John;
—-your birdhouse here is a work of ‘wood art’, combined with what must also be a labor of love! I also imagine that your birds love your art.

Reclaimed barn wood, and yes I know what it means to have to remove those nails from the wood. Do you apply any type of finish to the wood?

Thank you for sharing….
GODSPEED,
Frank

I use Thompson’s water seal to protect them and the birds certainly don,t waste anytime moving in them.
I still have enough reclaimed wood to build a few hundred more birdhouses and i am starting a new one today.
I just have to figure out what i,m building first. lol

First i,d like to say thanks for purchusing one of my plans.
My son sent me some of your pictures and you have done a great job so far.
The 5/4 decking board was a great idea. I hope everything was easy enough to understand.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

If you don,t mind i will make a new page on my site for your pictures ,then everyone will be able to see them.
Thanks again.

Yes go ahead and post the photo’s it’s coming along great I have all the room dividers in and working on the roof now. I made a few modifications ( the floor between stories will pull out. shat should make cleaning of the lower rooms easier but will make the porch detail a little harder at the corner posts.)

How hard was it to make the dormers?

Great work, John! I work with barnwood from the early 1900’s, too. those nails take a longggg time to get out sometimes! But once you joint and plane them, you get some real jewels!

I am waiting for some dry days to finish my post. (We are in the middle of our maonsoon season and I do most of my work outside.) Mine is nothing as extravagant as yours, but still some work for me.

God Bless,
Hawg
