Hello all,

It has been a long time since I have posted on here. It has also been a long time since I have made anything worth posting. We have just bought a new house about 3 months ago and my wife has asked me to make some new things to fill up all of the empty space we now have. The first thing I have made is this Knotty Alder coffee table. I made it in the mission style.

On this table I tried lots of new things. This was the first time that I have ever tried to do mortis and tendons. To make it even fun I cut them all by hand. I had to rig up a clamping system hooked to my bandsaw top to hold the boards up right so I could cut them. I also did a lot of work with hand planes for the first time on a protect. I have always been more of a sand paper guy, but after learning to keep the blade sharp I have found the hand plane to be very enjoyable to use. Finally the last big thing that I play around with is the finish. I first distressed it with lots of different objects because I figured that it was going to get dented and dinged from my children, so it might as well start that way. I finished this piece by going over the whole surface with a dark stain and then sanding it back. I then put a couple coats of BLO on and followed it up with a few coats of Poly.

I had a lot of fun building this table and I learned a lot. I look forward to building the side tables and tv cabinet to go with it. Any committees are welcome.
