A very good friend of mine was using tv trays and end table so I offered to make him some. Since he’s a friend I did it at cost. The tables are a very simple design which I drew up. I don’t even remember the final dimensions. The most fun thing about this project was that I bought a Festool Domino and used that to join everything. I know it takes a lot out of the hand tooled process and pride but my gosh did that thing save time. If I would have had it on that chest I could have done it in half the time. Then again I would not have had all that practice hand cutting mortise and tenons. So with the tables finished I sanded to 220 grit and used General Finish Espresso Gel Stain. Sadly my lack of knowledge on finishing lead me to believe that was good enough. I did not put a top coat over the stain so who knows how long the finish will last. I built both tables for about $120 dollars.

Festool Domino not figured in the cost…you are a better woodworker than a businessman! LOL

Dang it! Another testamonial tempting me to blow the bucks on a domino. I don’y know how long I can hold out.

Nice tables.

Very nice tables….good friend! I like the stain and finish.

LOL…every time I come into a thread after Charlie I’ve been thinking the same thought he has….I gotta get me one of those! What is the extraordinary allure of powertools. I too want to use handtools primarily but I just can’t cut the cord…..hehe.

Tim, Nice job on the tables. Your friend got a terrific deal – I hope he realizes that. Maybe you could get them back and put some finish on them. I’d hate to see the project get messed up. I’m sure your friend will understand (but then you’ll have to charge him more money…)

Charlie & Bob,

First you have to buy the Dowelmax; then you can get the Domino ;^D

Right, Tom, I’m hoping my recent purchase of Dowelmax will hold off the Domino – if not, I’ll blame Mot.

Nice work, Tim; I really like these tables.

If you don’t mind an observation, it looks like the drawer front has a snipe line from a thickness planer. These are often very hard to see until the finish is applied. Next time, run a longer piece through the planner or, if this is dimensioned lumber that you purchased, dampen the surface with a thin coat of shellac to bring out these marks so you can manage it when cutting your wood.

Yeah I didn’t realize until I applied the finish. I don’t have a jointer/planer so I use a local lumber mill. Before delivering to my friend I took the drawer front off and refinished it. The final product didn’t have a snipe line.

The table looks great. I’ll bet your dad can’t do that!
