Life is just a Bowl of ….Grapes?.......Sometimes, you get going on an idea and can’t leave it alone. I turned one of my little trays out of cherry, and decided it could use a little pizazz….the lines reminded me of vines, so why not add some grapes. I drilled shallow holes with forstner bits and cut plugs of the same size….1/2 and 3/8 inches. The bowl turning was nearly complete when I glued in the plugs, so it was easy to go back on the lathe to turn the plugs flush with the bowl surface.
The front bowl in the first photo is cherry with koa “grapes” and walnut vines. One walnut bowl has maple vines with cherry “grapes” , and the other has maple vines with koa “grapes”. The pictures don’t do justice to the koa grapes…..they really give off some spectacular cross-grain highlights.
The bowls are about 6 inches in diameter and 1.5 -2 inches tall and are finished with spray poly and then waxed and buffed. Each has a disk of soft leather applied to the bottom.
