Good question. The base cabinets were kind of thrown together based on the size of the shelving units. The shelves are copies of a unit that sits in the other corner of the room. It was a yard sale purchase a few years ago but it’s nice and sturdy and has a good look to it. It was also nice to have a working prototype for the odd measurement here and there.

Look real good. Very similar to what I am doing except no doors on the bottom. I really hope mine do not take that long. I have to install them around the first of September.

The bookshelves look great and I like the color. Your fabrication scenerio is simialr to mine. I too feel my finishing becomes a weak point of my projects. So how did you finish the oak?

The finish is some Ipswitch Pine Minwax stain. The oak hand rail and step in the adjacent kitchen was done with that stain so everything matches. The finsih is satin PolyAcrilic that I had leftover from another project as well as some other satin poly that I needed to get rid of. I used two or three coats depending on the location. I’m really happy with the look. We tend to use satin on most of our stuff in the house so this fits right in. By getting rid of all of the leftover finsih I saved a few bucks as well as set myself up for something different on the next project ;-).

They look real nice, Jerry. I know what you mean about maintaining patience throughout the project. There seems to come a time in every project when I have to resist the temptation to do something half-assed (er, I mean “cut corners’) to save a little time and get it completed.

Nice bookcases! What type of hinges did you use on the doors? I am curious about the Euro hinges (35mm) that are popular now. I’ve never used them yet, and was wondering how easy they are to install.

Wow, Jerry, this is a big project. I envy you having the space to do this. (Every tool I own was justified by one or other of my projects.)

The hinge detail is below. These are a version of the European hinge that is adjustable three ways. These require a face frame for installation. I got a deal on the hinges so I added the face frames. As far as installation, it was a snap. I did a couple of test holes on some scrap to make sure I had the position correct and after that it was smooth sailing. I think there is a jig you can buy detailed over at the Woodwhisperer.

Don, nice try. That detail looks like a coloration issue that shows up under the camera flash. One issue I did have was that the far right cabinet has the bottom face frame going all the way across and the side pieces butt to the top of that piece. I decided I liked the side frame pieces running the height of the cabinets so I changed the style on the other two.
