A family friend with a gorgeous house on the River in the English countryside asked me to come from Australia to build him a garden hut. He wanted a tranquil place to drink tea and watch the river in peace. He was inspired by a Chinese scroll he saw in a Paris museum. I designed and built this garden tea house for him over the course of 6 months. It is made with traditional Japanese joinery and lime rendering. The second picture gives you an idea of the setting in which it sits, just between a pond and a flowing river in his gorgeous & spacious English garden.
A labor of love, one of my all-time favorite pieces. A year ago, I married my wife inside this tea house.

Beautiful work, Rohy! Just amazing. Can you discuss the joinery a little more?

Ok, this is just too much. Garden project anyone…no really this is beautiful, beautiful site, beautiful construction. I would so much like to begin to learn the methods of Japanese joinery, and I would so much like to visit this space.
In South Hadley, Massachusetts, at the College of Mt. Holyoke, there is a Japanese Tea House called Wa Shin An that I used to visit many years ago. This was my first exposure to the methods and techniques of Japanese joinery. I fell in love with that building, and always enjoy seeing examples of this architecture. Thanks.

You get around, Rohy! And you work is great. Any formal training or are you self taught?

Extraordinary…..what a beautiful setting. I’d like to hear more on the joinery as well.
Woodspar…I’ve been to the Wa Shin An…my daughter was at UMass and we toured the area gardens together. Our original inspiration for our garden came from the Portland Japanese Garden after visiting my brother. She wouldn’t stop talking about it for months. She even wanted a Tea Graden but I didn’t quite go that far.
You must be in high demand Rohy.
