A Variety of Whales

I had shown a picture of the purpleheart version of this pattern but happened along a better picture. This is a really fun pattern by Lois Keener-Ventura so I took the opportunity to make several.

They are all basically the same dimensions which is 14” wide, 5 3/4” tall, and 5 1/2” deep.

The first is made of Blue Mahoe, a Jamaican wood. For a while it was easy to find but lately has become difficult to get and much more expensive. This one had a missing knot on the far left edge that I was going to shape to compensate for. The ever-wise wife said that it looked better without modification so I left it as is. The pulls are Yellowheart.

The second is of Black Walnut. I really like working in Walnut since I love the way it finishes. I had a sandwich of Padauk, Maple and Walnut that I shaped to make the pulls. I like the touch it gives the box.

The last is made of Purpleheart. A fantastic wood to use in my opinion. Hard and not very forgiving but the finish is amazing. The pulls were made of the cut offs from the main body.

They all have a gloss polyurethane coating and flocked drawers.

I thought showing the same design with different woods might be something different. Thanks for taking a look.
