Of all the bowls in the house, this is the most poplar! (insert groan here)
At a whopping 3” x 4” this is my biggest bowl to date, but not one of my 30 projects in 30 days projects, as I started it this winter. (Who made up these silly rules anyhow?) I finally got around to turning the inside this week. – So nice of this challenge to bring completion to some of these dusty half-projects.
Made from four glued up layers of poplar, it is the biggest bowl I’ve turned to date… and probably my biggest until I’m gifted some new chisels. I have some long and thin (and old) pseudo scrapers, but they chatter a great deal, It’ll take a while to get the hang of the termite hollowing tool, and my spindle gouges only go in so far.
The inside turned OK, was saved avec beaucoup de sanding.
I’m quite pleased with this bowl. In fact I might not put it up on the shelf, and actually use it. Richard Raffan would be proud. It seems the perfect size for ice cream (at least the perfect size according to proper portion sizes). I suspect the wood will insulate the contents better than glass too.
Sanded, sanded sanded, oiled, (left to “season”, yeah, that sounds good) and sanded some more. Ultimately finished with walnut oil, hand wash only!

Scott A great looking bowl. You should have loaded it up with ice cream so we all could have seen the actual volume.
