The variation is to cover a mistake I made.
In the photo you can see a horizontal strip of Maple about 1/4 inch from the bottom (on both ends). This was due to a dado made too deep on the inside of the end which accepts the bottom. The dado is cut on the inside of the end piece and later a template is used to cut the curve to the end on the outside. When I made the curved cut it exposed openings where I had cut too deeply from the inside.
I inserted a strip of Maple to “plug” the holes and sanded flush.
I actually like the way it turned out – appears to have a curved inlay giving added detail to the design.
So instead of calling it a fixed mistake – I’m calling it a “variation” on the design in Wood Magazine.
