This was my first commission job. A coworker brought me a web page printout for a 5’ wide screen with a built-in bench and asked if I could build it for him, but make it 8’ tall and 9’ wide. I agreed and started sketching out the plan and putting together a materials list and quote. When we were going over the quote, he decided he wanted a planter box instead of a bench. I updating the drawing and quote and got started.
The frames are made from 4×4 posts and with half lap joints on the outer frames while the center frame piece uses half lap, bridal and a through tenon joint. The face pieces are 2×6 and the screen is made from cedar fence pickets that were trimmed to size and sanded to be finish ready. I had to mock up the assembly on my front walkway and then dismantle everything and take it over in pieces to assemble on site.
They are happy with it and ended up using a pretty heavy coat of water seal to try to keep that cedar red for as long as possible. I learned a lot on this build and was really proud of it when it was installed.
