This is a portable Altar I designed and built for a nursing home. The home does not have a dedicated chapel, but holds worship services in a multi-purpose activity room, so the Altar needed to be easily moved (it is on casters). In addition, the chaplain requested storage space for linens, communion ware, and other items, so I installed a door on the rear and shelves inside. The Altar is constructed of red oak and red oak plywood. Overall dimensions are 60” x 30” x 39” high. I wanted to emphasize the horizontal, so I cantilevered the top, grooved the plywood and wrapped the legs and the bottom with horizontal trim. Vertical grooves on the front and rear add a simple cross pattern, with a simple oak cross mounted on the front face in the grooves. The design intent was a simplified or contemporary prairie style.
