Shaker Cherry Desk

I just finished this Shaker Desk for a friend. She wanted it large, it’s 52×36, I think. I used Chris Schwarz's plan for a Shaker side table and upsized it. If I had to to one again this size, I might make the legs larger and/or put a fifth leg in the back middle.

I’m mostly pleased with how it came out. I finished it with amberish shellac (mixture of blonde, orange, and garnet) topped with GF High Performance waterborne poly. The top was my first time to spray a finish. I definitely like that method for this poly, especially over a large surface. I learned that GF HP is a lot harder to apply by brush or pad on a surface this large and visible.

Nice looking desk, that cherry is really pretty. I love a nice wooden desk, with dovetails to boot! Good job on this one.

Charles

You did a swell job on it and nice DTs also.

My wife and brother in law tore out part of the wall in-between the kitchen and dining room and she is wanting a long shaker table to seat 12. I will have to ask you many questions in the future.

Happy to be of help, Arlin. Check out the Schwarz article/plan I linked to in the description as well.

Beautiful build, can’t go wrong with either Shaker or cherry,
I think the legs are just fine, no need to make them any larger, besides you’ll loose the lightness of the Shaker design. Also, don’t think the fifth leg in back is necessary, at only 52” long, and with that additional support for the back of the drawers, there shouldn’t be any problems with the top.
Great work.

Congrats on your well deserved ‘top three’ award.
I love the choice of woods in your drawers ,, shows off nice the dove tails. The Finish is perfect form my view.
