Reclaimed Douglas fir bar table

This was a commissioned piece for a local couple, who wanted a bar-height table for entertaining.

They wanted reclaimed wood, which in this part of the country means Douglas fir. But they also wanted it quite dark. We settled on a stain that would get them the colour they wanted.

The top is glued up from slabs of reclaimed Douglas fir. I had inlaid some maple bow ties to deal with some checking in the boards, but the clients decided they didn’t like the contrast. We settled on covering them with inlaid pieces of rolled steel, which are set into shallow mortises with epoxy. The bow ties are still underneath, so they still perform their intended function.

Looks good, I’ve thought about making a desk or table using pipes as legs but like a lot of projects, haven’t got around to it yet.
