Have you ever had one of those DUH, slap your forehead moments? Regretfully I have more than my fair share. I saw the design for this 3 drawer box and thought it was great. It was called an Anniversary Box but of course that little clue slipped right past me. It was also mentioned that the box could be made for companies for special occasions, etc. How nice, and that means??......

Okay, so I decide to make two of the boxes at the same time. The first is out of Black Walnut sandwiched in between some Maple. The second is Padauk sandwiched in Maple. Great stuff. I’m moving right along with the process. I’ve cut the boards, laminated them to form the blocks, cut off the back, cut out the drawers, taken the drawers apart and reassembled them. While putting the drawers back in for a test fit, it dawns on me; the drawers make the shape of a “50”!!! I’ve worked on these for two days thinking they were just the coolest little three drawer boxes only to see that they spell out 50. Ooooohhhh, Anniversary Box!!! Special occasions!!!!

In other words “I FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT!” While I sulk, the boxes languish in my shop because I just can’t bring myself to finish them. Eventually (about a month) I do and of course, they turn out to be some of the smoothest, shiniest, well fitting boxes I have ever made.

When I had pulled them out to finish them, my 17 yr old daughter gets home and walks through the garage to the house. She stops, looks at the boxes and asks, “Dad, why do the boxes say SO???” I whimper as I pound my head against the wall.

Now I just need to wait until my friends have a 50th birthday or anniversary or someone wins an award for sarcasm (SO!!). I’ll be well prepared.

They are both about 12” wide, 5 3/4” tall and 5 1/2” deep. A natural colored stain was applied before being finished off with several layers of thinned polyurethane. The surface is really smooth thanks to lots of time spent taking down little bumps with 0000 steel wool. The drawers are flocked with wine colored fibers. The Walnut box has black scalloped pulls and the Padauk box has brushed pewter scalloped pulls.

Thanks for taking a look.

I’m with you…I didn’t see the “50” until you pointed it out!
Maybe no one else will…if you don’t point it out!
Still a great piece.

Charles, I have to agree with Ellen. I would never have noticed the 50 if you had not pointed it out. They looked just like another set of gorgeous boxes to me. They both have a nice wood combination that contrasts well.

Hang on to them for another 49 years. I’ve got a 50th anniversary coming up. Seriously, very nice work.
