Greene & Greene Blanket Chest

Just finished a Greene & Greene Style Blanket Chest, designed by Darrell Peart and featured in the December 2014 Fine Woodworking Magazine (#243). I used Sapele Ribbon Stripe (African Mahogany) with Ebony ascents. It is a fairly large Blanket Chest at 45Lx22Wx16H, but now having it now complete I think the proportions are spot on. I can honestly say I have never sanded so much on one project in my woodworking career. A couple of coats of Danish Oil finished it off. I did have a small panic attach last weekend when I applied paste wax and the results were extremely poor. Luckily I turned to my fellow LumberJocks for advice and with a lot more fussing now have it fixed to where I can live with it (no one except you guys and me would probably ever notice the inconsistent application). Thank you to everyone who offer suggestions on the post.

This was my first attempt at G&G Style and although challenging I have always been drawn by the style.
This is a wedding gift for my Son and soon to be Daughter In-Law and I am driving it to Alexandria next weekend as a surprise. Pretty confident they don’t frequent this site so should be safe in posting early. Overall I am pretty satisfied. I am always my biggest critic and happy not everyone see my mistakes (my “fingerprints” in each build).

Thanks for looking. Great design Mr. Peart!

That is one wide board. Very nicely done.

Great looking blanket chest! I love the G&G style, and you nailed all the details. I’m not a big fan of wax over Danish oil—I like to bring the wood alive a bit with the Danish oil, then finish with semi-gloss wiping varnish.

Very nice chest. I love the look of Sapele … especially when finished with Danish Oil.

Your project moved me to locate the FW magazine and re-look at the article. There’s a lot of work to this chest. You did a fabulous job!

First attempt?/! You nailed it from detail to finish. Now you have to go back to FW for the article on G&G bed to place this chest at the foot.

Rick, this is a real beauty and you’ve done a fine job on it.
