I have been wanting to make an acoustic amplifier for an iPhone for some time. My wife is big on listening to music while showering and she typically sticks her phone in a drinking glass to make it loud enough to hear. I figure this will be a little more classy. I based my design off of Dustin Penner’s design, who is one of the woodworkers that I subscribe to on YouTube. Although, I do not have a CNC set up like he does, I just used my bandsaw, drill press and scroll saw to get the same effect. I really like his design and it sounds great when used with an iPhone.

Here is a link to Dustin’s build.

Nice work. I’ve been developing, in my head, a chaging station. Your amplifier is giving me a few ideas.

Looks awesome! Nice woods clean design. How wide is it, and how tall?

For this project I used a mineral oil/beeswax mixture.

Just came across this—what a great idea, and a great looking speaker!

By the way, is there a special reason for the plywood middle piece? Would solid wood work as well?

MeanDean,

The center piece is white oak. I imagine that any hard surface will work about the same in a design like this. Ultimately, the charging station version I made amplifies the sound better than this design. I love the look of this one, but the function isn’t as good as it can be.
