A friend of mine recently passed and I offered to make a bench for him. He was a tug boat captain, often wore gum boots, built a board walk in a local nature reserve and Eliza was the love of his life. I got it all in.
I built the bench to be just a mortise and tenon project, however; added the cross pieces on the bottom with screws (yes I have sinned) as I thought it was important for safety and durability purposes because it could end up in a public place. I had the ideas for the images on the headboard and had someone do the carving. I presented it to the family last night Aug 13th along with some music and lyrics to go with it, which I had written. They were all pretty moved.
When you build something like this you have a lot of time to think about who it is for. The music wrote itself as I worked and with his poetic name, which is on the headboard, it wasn’t hard to compose. Is it such a wonderful thing to take my two favorite past times, woodworking and music and combine the two. Next is a guitar shaped coffee table for another friend, along with a blues piece to go with it.
I have included pictures of the bottom and the back of the bench. It is my belief if you make something like this it should be well finished from all sides and angles. The wood started out as was rough cedar from a friend’s cedar mill and the mortise and tenons were made with the Leigh Industries Jig FMT pro. It works beautifully.
