I made this memory box for my girlfriend’s birthday as she’s obsessed with keeping things from days out, etc. I made it so it can stand up right in her book case. The door/lid is held shut by a 6mm earth magnet, the box is made from chestnut i had laying around from an antique dresser that fell apart and the inlays are Iroko purpleheart and maple. The inside of the lid had a large defect in it but luckily the heart was just big enough to cover it.

So this is my first attempt at an inlay, i bought a jig to help me get used to the idea of how inlays work. Its always something ive been amazed by, i think next time I’ll be more creative and go for a free hand design.

Doing inlay is my greatest fear, so I don’t do it. Having said that, I think you did an amazing job!

A little helpful criticism? Next time you inset a magnet, try using a Forstner bit. It will make a nice clean flat bottomed hole and there won’t be any tear out like you had here.

I’ll bet your girlfriend was really happy with this box.

Nicely done. Your first attempt at inlay certainly looks great.
