The traditional gift theme for your 5th anniversary is wood – how perfect for a woodworker!
The bottom of the box, which provides the resonance for the sound, is 1/8” thick cherry with two 1/8” thick cherry runners that create a dado. The dado is supposed to provide better base tones.
The sides are quartersawn maple, which I was able to cut from a piece of 8/4 flatsawn stock. I like the quartersawn look of the maple, the pattern almost resembles a piece of sheet music.
The lid is made from 1/8” hardboard that I veneered with birdseye maple on the top and attached a mirror to the bottom.
The moulding on the base and the lid is sapele, which I think really pairs well with the maple.
Both the hinges and feet are from Brusso. The movement is a 72 note “Canon in D”, which sounds amazing! That was the song that my bride came down the aisle to…lets just say this project was a big hit on the home front!
