I was recently asked to have some of my furniture featured in an art exhibit in a neighboring town so naturally I thought it was a good reason to build some new stuff!
I’m sure many of you have never visited western kanas so I’ll give ya a little known fact. EVERYTHING is red oak. So I decided I would build the whole set out of Bubinga. (people get all excited when stuff is a bit different out here).
I started off with a Maloof lowback chair (which I ended up naming “Walt”). Over the past year or so I have built several rockers and settees but never just a plain lowback. Something I thought was pretty cool about this chair is that it was built from one board.
After that I started on the coffee table. I have seen a whole slew of “Maloofian” coffee tables recently so I thought I would build something different that still matched the chair. What I came up with was a table that floats about 2” off the floor and has a single 21 in deep drawer. The drawer bottom is flocked and i used undercount blumotion slides.
Finally the side table I designed to look a lot like a Maloof pedestal table. Most people have a lamp and a table beside their reading chair so I thought I would just kill 2 birds with one stone. There will be a pendant light hanging from the top of the arm (when it finally shows up in the mail).
As far as finish goes I applied 3 coats of Festool Surfix oil and buffed the crap out of it.
