Bread Board Wedding Gift

Project by Timbers posted 884 days ago 2193 views 27 times favorited 26 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This project was a wedding gift for some friends of mine. It is made of Purple Heart and Maple with Mohagny accents. I went to YouTube and found The Wood Whispers segment on cutting boards to get some ideas and found his podcasts to be thorough and informative. I finished it with salad bowl finish from the Rockler store. The weave pattern was inspired by the inlay on a small box from Morroco that I have. I used epoxy systems 105 resin with 206 hardner.

Ok, so what is the secret to the weaving design? I am trying to figure out if those boards are solid and bent, cut, or what?

I looks great when finished. I love Purple Heart for its rich color and accent/contrast with other woods.

Excellent.

As for Bill’s question: I’m guessing the maple boards are joined with half lap joints.

And Miss Deb – thanks for making me hungry. LOL

Hard to not see the top as actually woven. Great gift. I wonder if it’ll be deemed “too good to use”?

Nice, the basket weave pattern looks great and a good choice of contrasting woods. In this months Fine Woodworking there is a Credenza that utilizes basket weave marquetry for the drawer bottoms, a little over the top I suppose seeing as if the thing is actually used and packed full of papers you wouldn’t even see the drawer bottoms, but slick never the less. In a project or two I might be up to the challenge myself, but till then I admire the folks, yourself included, that can pull it off.

Thanks to all for the wonderful comments.

So the secret to the weave pattern-its only an illusion.
A lap joint would be a more solid design, but that is not what I chose. I first glued the thin mohagny accents to my strips of maple. Then cut the maple to the correct sizes for the weave effect and added the purple hearts squares for the”background.” I had to sand the pieces here and there to get things to look right and found that small differences in the way things lined up added to the woven look since a cloth or other fiberous weave is never perfect. Once I got things to look how I liked I added west sytems epoxy between everywhere and squeezed with clamps. Had to sand for a while. And then some more. Note the different grain directions to extra care. Fiinished with salad bowl finish. Oh yeah, rounded over the edge with 1/4 ” bit on my router. Hope that ansewers things!

I did check out this months Fine Woodworking and saw that Credenza. Seems odd to put that in the drawers but it is a nice surprise!
